February 19 Flash Fiction: Puppy Love

Today’s flash fiction prompt: Write about the ease of friendship. As nothing in the realm of relationships comes easy for me, I found this prompt a little hard to get into. I landed somewhere though. Hope you enjoy it!

Puppy Love

I fell in love at age seven. My mom and I were at the mall, window shopping after daycare. She chatted on the phone, my hand in hers, while I nibbled a churro the size of my arm. My cream colored dress caught a good bit of cinnamon, and when my mom saw the mess I’d made of myself, she whisked us away to the bathrooms.

Jewelry shops and shoe stores blurred by, and I eventually tripped over my shoelaces. I bent down to tie them, and that’s when I saw her. Licking the window as if she could get at the crumbs on my dress, she put her little brown paws up and yipped. Those beady eyes followed me as I pushed into the pet store, oblivious to the sign that read no food.

The fuzzy brown and white pup yipped at me again, and I smiled. “Hey girl.”

She yawned and scratched her ear, then tumbled over her siblings to greet me. I placed my hand inside the clear plexiglass box and offered her a bit of my churro. She licked it right out of my palm, then continued to lick my fingers. That’s when I knew.

I’d found my new best friend. For thirteen years, we shared long walks, embarrassing mishaps, and more churros than either of us could justify. I told her my secrets, and she showed me her favorite hiding spots. She comforted me when I needed it. Twice as much during my awkward phase. She never once broke my heart.

I hope I never broke hers.
