February 1 Flash Fiction: Butter

My first story in the February flash fiction challenge. Today’s prompt: Write a story inspired by a favorite song. I chose “Butter” by BTS, and as the first story written during black history month, this one’s dedicated to all my sisters.

BUTTER

The light winked green, and she stepped into the crosswalk. Head to toe she was brown, black, grey. A cedar dressed in silky midnight, with hair branching wildly into dark curls streaked with gray.

Eyes found her, then burned holes into the asphalt, pretending not to see. As she passed, she felt them at her back. Their weight may have made her stumble yesterday.

But not today.

Today, the wind whistled its approval. Life coursed through her veins. Warmth kissed her skin, and her burdens melted in the sunlight. God’s gifts; whispered reminders of her power, her purpose.

And, smooth like butter, this Queen crossed to the other side.
