My Contemplations

  • Words Words Words

I was looking over an old poem I wrote some years back, Useless Words, and I remembered what I felt when I wrote it. I’m a writer. I love words. And I remember words spoken to me, good, bad, random, whatever. And long after I’ve forgotten the actual words spoken, I remember the sting. Or the exhilaration. That’s because words matter. Words hurt. Words build us up; they tear us down. Words keep us from being happy; words thrust us into our happily ever after. Words make us afraid, they make us excited, they hold us in suspense, they answer our questions. Words make a difference. Words are healers, and words are weapons of mass destruction. Words communicate what I’m doing, what I’m thinking, what I think about what I’m doing, the list goes on and on. Words have power, words have presence, words have force. Imagine if every word you’ve ever taken in, spoken by you or by others, became a cell, and all of those cells together formed a person. A person who never, EVER, stopped talking. That’s how powerful words are.

Matthew 12:36 says “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Makes me want to hush. Like, right now. At the very least, we should consider our words…
